325: After the Fall

The end of the war came as a relief to most French people. In Britain, Charles de Gaulle called for the French to fight on.

French colonial administrations had to decide which French leadership to follow, while the British seized or attacked what they could of the French Navy.

  1. Just a detail, maybe nit to pcik. You will want to be careful when you are discussing specific armor vehicles that appear in W2 and which versions. You mention that PzIII AFVs invaded France, but they also invaded Poland, just in smaller numbers. Also, PzIV AFVs invaded both Poland and France, again in small numbers. The PzIV was mainly an infantry support vehicle with a low-velocity howitzer for infatntry support and not anti-armor. Only after North Africa heated up did the Germans put an anti-tank gun on the PzIV model F2. The PzIvV was teh workhorse of the German army in WW2 and in many ways similar to the US Sherman.     • Thanks for the correction. I should have covered myself by saying “most of the tanks…” My larger point was to push back against the argument that the French military missed an opportunity to study German tactics in Poland in 1939, by pointing out that the German way of war changed significantly in the interim.
