The early stages of the economic collapse appeared in the United States, though the slowdown in international trade (exacerbated by the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act) affected everyone.

Then in 1931, bank failures began in Austria and spread to Germany and other countries in Europe and South America, as the overlapping financial crises plaguing the world combined into the Great Depression.

  1. This is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE podcast. The presentation is excellent. The audio quality is outstanding. The research is impeccable. Mark’s diction is faultless. I really like the length of the episodes. I like that he will do multiple episodes to cover such complex subjects as India or the Treaty of Versailles. I’ve listened to most episodes several times, finding new information and pleasure each time. The only criticism I have concerns the theme music, which I don’t really like (sorry Mark).

  2. Hi Mark, loving the podcast and am learning a lot! Will be donating shortly too keep your good work going. One last thing though… The reference to Chequers, the Prime Ministers residence referenced in this episode is actually in Buckinghamshire and not Kent. At least, it still was last week when I drove by.😊

    • Silly me. I’ve never been to either myself, but thank you for the correction. (I may have been thinking of Chartwell when I said that.)

  3. Hi Mark, I just wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying the podcast. I’ve been binge listening this year and I am almost caught up! I appreciate what you are doing, and am looking forward to learning and listening for years to come. I just donated today and plan to leave a review soon. Thank you!!
